We regularly see three varieties of Kingfisher here on Pomeroy Reserve – the Brown Hooded, Malachite and Half-collared. It was a surprise and delight this week to spot the Giant Kingfisher at the far dam. Definitely a giant – its size, over 40cms and its comparatively huge bill made it easily recognisable. Much duller in colour than the other varieties, lacking the brilliant blues but its rufus breast appears bright against the contrast of speckled grey and black of its other feathers. The dam has a lot of fish in it so we hope that we may spot this welcome visitor again.
